This is Botswana. Steve and two complete strangers fixing Toto, who had two rear bushings improperly installed, resulting in the entire back axle shifting forward. We started two years ago with the kindness of strangers and we end that way. This is typical of the kindness and character of Batswana. Not only are they helping fix the truck, they said “my home is your home.” #botswana #botswanaisbest #payitforward #totothelandrover #kindnessofstrangers #overland #overlandafrica #africaoverland #botho #roadsidemechanic #landroverlife #landroverdefender #defender110 #onelifeliveit
After two weeks in the shop, major parts replacements, and more money than we should have spent, we spent our 18th anniversary swapping the brake pads that were improperly installed and trying to fix the bushings that were brand new as of yesterday. Posted up at SOS Children’s Village thanks to the kindness of a Motswana who spent his ENTIRE afternoon under the truck with Steve. Tomorrow, we start over. #happyanniversary #kindnessofstrangers #rollwiththepunches #landrover #defender110 #africaoverland #overlandafrica #overland #torothelandrover
We left Gabs this morning. Our farewell tour of Botswana begins as do many of our trips these days - with Toto on the side of the road and Steve with a wrench and manual. #landroverlife #cliche #landrover #defender110 #roadsiderepair #noreallyitsfine #readthemanual #overland #overlandafrica #africaoverland #totothelandrover
Two years ago, I stood in front of this classroom on my first day of teaching at UB. Today is my last day on a campus that has become home, with colleagues who have become friends, and with students who are going to change the world - at least as much as they changed me. #universityofbotswana #ub #gaborone #botswana #africa #classroom #highered #botswanaisbest #ilovethisplace

Camel Trophy Land Rovers will catch your eye at Overland Expo West in Flagstaff, too.

Eight months ago we threw too many clothes in a suitcase and flew to North Carolina for our first ever Overland Exposition – OvEx East, 2016.

Western North Carolina and the lushly forested Blue Ridge mountains were new landscapes for us, and we loved every minute – reconnecting with old friends, and making lots and lots of new ones. Asheville is a temple to good food and beer, and the Biltmore Estate is a distinctly unique venue for a bunch of tent-bound off-road hooligans. There were Land Rovers to drive, and adventure bikes to ogle.

As instructors, we shared our experience planning and driving our first self-drive safari in Botswana and Namibia with two groups of very engaged students, and we learned a lot from far more experienced Africa hands like Sam Manicom and Pete Sweetser.

Steve will be back at Overland Expo West next week with the same program. OvEx West takes place in Flagstaff, AZ – a vastly different landscape than North Carolina, but we anticipate the spirit of the event will be much the same.

We’ll look forward to meeting new friends, and learning much more.

That learning part is extra important because the big news is that this summer we are preparing to really drift.

We are headed back to Africa, but this time for longer than five weeks. Julie won a Fulbright Fellowship at the University of Botswana for 2017-2018. We leave for Botswana the first part of July and will live there through next summer.

Of course, our not-so-secret plan is to spend as much time as we can exploring Africa by 4×4 and sharing those experiences right here on mtdrift.com.

Be sure to stay tuned for more, as things are about to get interesting!

I had wanted to go to Overland Expo West this year. I even considered requesting the time off from work and driving down there. I love Arizona and I have some friends I’d like to visit on the New Mexico border. I hope it is a pleasant trip! We are planning our travels for this year. We had some unfortunate challenges this year that forced us to burn more of vacation than we would have liked, so we are going to be limited to shorter weekend trips until the end of September. Glad to see you posting again!

    1. Thanks Tobias! I’ve been following the saga of your JK, hopefully it won’t give you any more problems! And, sometimes the best trips are local ones – hopefully you can make a swing out west this fall (the best time anyway, in my opinion).
